THE KAISER!

By: Daryl Beattie
Event: Review
Date: 31 Dec 2006

The entire 55 races of the underSteer year have been run and the winner of the inaugural underSteer TT title is Gibernever. The early leader was The X Factor who later relinquished that and ended up coming 5th largely due to their 2nd place finish in F1, coming 11th (MotoGP), 8th (V8) and 7th (WRC) in the other categories. Eyes of the Dragon was 4th with a consistent effort coming 5th (F1), 4th (MotoGP and V8) but let down in WRC, coming 12th.  more...

The end of an era

By: Scotty Beveridge
Event: Brazil
Date: 23 Oct 2006

The Brazilian GP has been the setting for the end of an era. Schuey is gone. Michelin are gone. Kimi is going to Ferrari. Depending on who you believe, Ross Brawn is leaving. Fernando is going to McLaren. On the other hand, the rest of the new crop of young drivers are about to step up. Next year will see Lewis Hamilton, Nelson Piquet Jr, and Heikki Kovalainen join current young guns Nico Rosberg and Robert Kubica on the F1 circus. I highly doubt any of them will go on to match Schuey's record, but I can see one or maybe two of these young guns winning a world title.  more...

Shue's Blues Renault Amused

By: Daryl Beattie
Event: Japan
Date: 18 Oct 2006

The Japanese Grand Prix. Some Ferrari fella told me that it has been good and bad for them. They lost the title there in '99 won it in '00 and '03 so I guess they were due to lose there this time around with Shuey's blown engine which Ferrari say was a valve breakage. It was Shuey's first blown engine in over 5 years and with Alonso winning and taking a 10 point lead going into the last race some are speculating about the final round, including some dementia ridden former world champions.  more...

Chinese Democracy

By: Gladious Fermingo
Event: China
Date: 8 Oct 2006

My first memories of China were from school when I had to do an assignment comparing the democracies of China and Australia. I simply showed ten minutes of film; five minutes of Tiananmen Square circa 1989, then five minutes of Don's Party. I failed that assignment.

I was met at Shanghai airport by South African ex-F1 driver Niki Lauda. Niki is a different South African to most (Ed Note: because he's Austrian) because he was mildly successfully at his chosen sport.  more...

FORZA CHEATING!

By: Richie Benaud
Event: Italy
Date: 24 Sep 2006

Home of the Tifosi, the home race of Ferrari and home of the F1 heart and it isn't a bleeding heart as Fernando Alonso found out when he was penalised for blocking Massa on his last qualifying lap but the consensis was that it was a "ridiculous" decision with reports that Martin Brundell and Mark Blundell got into a verbal stoush with Herr Mosley. They calculated that Massa was no closer than 100 metres but he claimed that he lost downforce into the last corner, parabolica.  more...

Personality Quiz: Your Guide To Tipping

By: Daryl Beattie
Event: Hungary
Date: 20 Aug 2006

Well Button as done it and as he said in his unilateral "now I don't have to do those interviews about when am I going to win my first race. Now they can say I've had 1 win in 113 GP's. It sounds a lot better." True but it still sounds pretty sh#t.

Below is a personality quiz to find out which category you should tip on that would best suit your style. Which ever category you have the most points for is the one or ones you should do. Simple as Simon.  more...

Bridgestone vs Michelin at Germany

By: Gladious Fermingo
Event: Germany
Date: 6 Aug 2006

Hey all, not much to report from the German GP. Ferrari are back on top with another one - two victory. They still trail Renault but are looking pretty good at the moment. Championship leader Alonso finished back in 5th. The reason for the form reversal between Alonso and Schumacher is pretty much down to tyres. This power struggle will no doubt change throughout the year, depending on which track they are at, and how hot it is.  more...

Shoot the Duke!

By: Sules
Event: France
Date: 26 Jul 2006

Hey Sules here! It was only a month ago that I was watching the Indy race on my television hoping for Ralf to back it into the wall for the third year in a row with a blown rear tyre. I started to yell at the TV "Shoot the Duke! C'MON!" as it was my understanding that jeopardising the future of F1 was a support category at Indy. I would have taken anything, the flexing rear wings on the BMW was a good try and I applaud the Beemers for not giving up by chucking a couple of pieces of four by two on the front of their cars. I have done the same in support but it is a sad day indeed when F1 can't have a simple World War. I was hoping to call this report the F1 World War 597 but oh well.  more...

Weekend - Scotty gets a GOLD ticket

By: Scotty Beveridge
Event: Canada
Date: 26 Jun 2006

So, it's Monday here in Montreal. Sorry I didn't get the Saturday report or Sunday report done, but hey as you could see in the last report, you could take your own beers in. On Friday, I had sussed out the situation re getting onto the track after the race, in order to p!ss-bolt (aka: the BMW challenge, aka: run) to the podium. It looked like there was a likely spot just before the Wall of Champions, then I saw a spot right opposite the podium (behind the main grandstands), so it looked like the BMW challenge was going to be pretty short. I wasn't sure where they would let people in, so on Saturday morning, I went for a warmup run before heading to the track, just in case I had to run further.... That felt pretty good and I was as confident about Sunday as Fernando was. On Saturday, I managed to get into my grandstand seat for the first race, Formula BMW, and managed to see "Baby JPM" (Colombian driver) get involved in a few incidents... That was pretty good. I watched practice from the outside of turn 6, on this private verandah, that people jump up onto... Got some very nice pictures from there (check out http://tcarter.spaces.msn.com/ in the next few days to see them). Qualifying saw Nico screw BBQ for the second time this year and saw Fernando take the pole. One interesting thing was seeing all the Schumi fans get all excited when he went to the top of the time-sheets in the last qualifying period, while running in fuel burn mode... Me being the anorak I am, couldn't understand why they were all getting so excited... It was very clear to me that it would be a Renault (and most likely Fernando) on pole.... silly Schumi fans.... After qualifying was the Star Mazda race... I don't know if anyone saw that, but there was a huge crash in that race... I think there were about 15 cars taken out. Thankfully the two drivers taken away in ambulances are OK.  more...

Friday - YOU CAN BRING ESKIES IN

By: Scotty Beveridge
Event: Canada
Date: 24 Jun 2006

Well, I left you yesterday on my way to the pub to watch the Aussies. What a great game that was. I must be the only Australian who was impressed with Zelko Kalac... I thought he brought a lot of excitement to the game, with every Croatian shot, or Australian back pass, you wondered if he would stop it. At the F1 today, the big news is that Canadians are allowed to take eskies filled with beers, vodka (for RedBull Vodkas), and whatever else (it seems, since I smelt something that reminded me of the big day out) they want in to the track. After my incident with Jacques yesterday, my press pass was revoked, so I was there with the plebs paying $6 a beer... I'll have to do something about that for tomorrow... To the practice sessions, and as normal the first session was a pretty dull affair, with the third drivers doing the bulk of the work. The second session saw Alonso second overall and fastest of the race drivers. Kimi was a little way off Alonso in 4th, and Mark Webber must have got some extra pace from the Socceroos' win. He was 7th and just 0.8 seconds off Alonso.  more...

Thursday - Dannii sent me

By: Scotty Beveridge
Event: Canada
Date: 22 Jun 2006

Hey all and welcome to Montreal for the Grand Prix du Canada. I got into Montreal last night and headed down to the track today to pick up my press pass. That all went well but I was surprised how many press passes they were handing out. It seemed every man and his dog could get on the bus to take you around the track to the pits. Later I found out that it was an open day and all fans could go in. I managed to see Heikki Kovalainen run out of the Renault garage and jump the fence. He was joining the fellow Renault drivers and engineers on a track walk. I wish I had have seen Fernando at turn 3 and got a picture of Fisi gloating in the de-brief of Fernando's incident there last year. Instead I saw them walking the long straight to the pits, after my pit walk. During the pit walk, I also managed to see JV. He was keen to have a chat with me on all things musical and to a lesser degree, formula one. I was saying goodbye, and he insisted on signing my JPM hat. I said "Thanks, but no thanks. This is worth more without your signature." He was disgusted, so stole it off me and signed it anyway. I was spewing, so I said "Dannii is better off without you, and she said Kimi's way better too!"... He could have taken it one of two ways.... I was around long enough to find out. Straight away his henchmen bustled me out of the crowd scrum.  more...

Monaco 2006: You know what that means!

By: Gladious Fermingo
Event: Monaco
Date: 28 May 2006

Friday was the night of the big underSteer 5th year anniversary party and I’m still getting over it. For anybody who missed it, it was a big one - an effin big one! As I generally have memory lapses once I’ve even had a sniff of alcohol I hired a local slave (Bubika) to follow me around for the night and take down notes on what actually transpired.  more...

The Journey Begins

By: Scotty Beveridge
Event: Spain
Date: 16 May 2006

Barcelona has managed to produce a real Barcelona of a race. They really need to start running this track in the opposite direction, or something. There is no way it is ever going to produce great (or even good) racing with a 5th or 6th gear corner coming onto the straight. I've seen a few Spanish GPs in my time, won there a lot in Microprose's GP 1, 2 and 3, so I decided to "watch" this race live using formula1.com's live timing. After that, I managed to tune in for the first 3 laps of Channel Ten's coverage then went to bed and watched it the next day. On Monday, I watched Imola, Nürburgring, and the Barcelona races back to back. I came to this conclusion... If Imola was a "5 cans of Red Bull" race, Nürburgring was a 2 can race, then Go With The Clio must have invited Wendell Sailor around for the Barcelona race. So, because I wasn't over in Barcelona to cover this race, unfortunately I can't bring you up to date on Jimmy Jump, but the 'monkey dance' Fernando was doing after the race looked like something straight out of Jimmy's book of tricks.  more...

Everything you needed to know about the past weekend

By: Gladious Fermingo
Event: Europe

That's the last time I go to New Zealand for the V8's! I've picked up a bad cold from over there. New Zealand really is a third world country! Anyway, this means I now have to cover this round of the F1 GP for underSteer from my bedroom. Warning: When I'm sick I get bitter, and when I get bitter I type more... it's like an addiction.  more...

Where Have All The Cars Gone

By: Richie Benaud
Event: San Marino
Date: 3 May 2006

Welcome to another round of underSteer. We've had a quite superb start to the season. Mcwillari and Penex Racing, the Harold and Maude of underSteer, were looking for the recent IRL race. The doctor who predicted bonus driver Ralf Schumacher coming third couldn't fathom bonus driver Sébastien Loeb winning a Tarmac rally in France. Murray Walker commentated at the Australian GP (and there's some quotes below) while Gert's comment at the Argentinean rally was 438, the score South Africa made against Australia in a one-day cricket match. It was a magnificent innings by Herschelle Gibbs to get them there and they look like a good chance to win the World Cup. I can say that without fear of jinxing them because I'm sure they'll do that themselves.  more...

Where's Webber

By: Scotty Beveridge
Event: Australia
Date: 7 Apr 2006

I know! I know! You've been hanging for this report! You, like me, agree with Murray (BTW: We here in Oz had the great man commentating on the race) when he says "Some people think Formula One is boring. Well I say they've got ROCKS in their head!". This was one of those classic races, in the same vein as Suzuka 2005 - "Alonso 130R's Schumi / How Fisi lost the race", Nürburgring 2000 - "Schumi Reigns in the Rain", pretty much half the races at Spa, and any wet race at Adelaide, particularly 1992 (or was it 1991?, or 1989? not sure) - "Senna, Spin, Spin, Spin, Round, Round, Round". The difference here was that there was no rain and there's two similarities that stand out in my mind. Firstly, Schumi was his old self. He was REALLY pushing in the race, either that or he's getting old and more prone to make mistakes, one of the two. Secondly, there was a "spin, spin" from Murray after Ide did a 720 spin. What you can take from that is that Ide (aka: Yogi Bear because according to the TAB his first name is Yugi) is one spin from being Senna. So surely Ide will become Senna at Imola... My travel agent was saying it's spooky to be flying on September 11, but that's what I call spooky!  more...

Sepang 2006: Commonwealth Games Edition

By: Gladious Fermingo
Event: Malaysia
Date: 20 Mar 2006

Welcome all to the second round of the underSteer F1 tipping championship. I was supposed to be reporting live from Malaysia for this round but I instead decided to stay home and fly down to Melbourne to comfort my old friend Paul Stoddart after the demise of his beloved Ozjet company. Now you would think with 'Aussie' Paul being the ex boss of Minardi he would be used to failed ventures but this one has really hit him hard. When he met me at the Tullamarine airport he gave me a big bear-hug. Then he just wept openly. I think he was more upset about letting down his staff than anything else.  more...

Punter Launches

By: Daryl Beattie
Event: Bahrain
Date: 16 Mar 2006

Welcome back Kotters. As usual it has been a long wait for the Formula 1 season but with RPM celebrating their 10th year on air it went by in a flash for me. Billy Woods has been busy reducing his workload so that now his contribution to motorsport will be as the patron saint of puns (aka underSteer) which once said will result in a dickie smile. This has resulted in everyone else having to pick up the slack. With Billy celebrating in the studio it was up to Cromley to cover the F1, Thruster to cover the rally and for me to attend all the launches for the underSteer punters, you couldn't wipe the smile off Billy's face, he was so happy to be celebrating in the studio.  more...

The Long Hard Off Season

By: Gladious Fermingo
Event: Preview
Date: 9 Mar 2006

Well after a long off season the blue riband event for underSteer is about to begin - Formula One 2006. Welcome all to another season of F1 tipping at underSteer. For those who aren't familiar with me, my name is Gladious Fermingo and I am one of a couple of reporters who "work" for underSteer. After each GP we produce a report talking about the race that was and whatever the hell else has been happening around the traps. We (I) usually peddle in all kinds of rumour and innuendo so if you are easily offended I suggest you don't read any of my reports for the rest of the year.  more...
